SIBU: The recent Christmas and year end operations to safeguard the safety of riverine commuters was a great success with no untoward incident reported.

In disclosing this to The Borneo Post yesterday, Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) Sibu assistant controller (Region II) Hatta Morshidi said both boat operators and passengers gave their fullest cooperation.“They know that safety is paramount and adhered strictly to the board’s safety requirements,” he added.

The operations focused on river block to prevent overloading. There were also static operations at Sibu Express Boat Terminal. During the operation, the ‘No Ticket, No Entry’ policy was stringently enforced besides the pre-departure pass.

Boats which didn’t comply with safety requirements were not issued with departure pass or allowed to leave the terminal. On another matter, Hatta said SRB is undertaking rewiring of the whole Sibu Express Boat Terminal to prevent tripping.

He revealed that renovation to the terminal building would only be carried out sometime this year. “At the moment, SRB is still doing the documentation inclusive of the proposed design,” he said.
