KUCHING, 13th August 2025 – The Sarawak Rivers Board received a courtesy visit from the Resident Mukah Division, YBhg. Datu Kueh Lei Poh, accompanied by the District Officer of Matu, the District Officer of Dalat, and officers from the Public Works Department and the Department of Irrigation and Drainage, Mukah Division. The engagement session was held to discuss and understand the requirements and procedures of the Sarawak Rivers Board in relation to activities and engineering works to be carried out in or across rivers and riverbanks, as well as matters concerning navigational safety and river cleanliness in Sarawak.
The session was chaired by Lt. Col. Ding Tiew Wong (Retired), the Controller of the Sarawak Rivers Board, and attended by Senior Officers and Technical Staff from Riverine Safety Section, Technical Services Section, Barrage and Shiplock Section, and Enforcement and Legal Section. A presentation of an overview on the functions and duties of the Sarawak Rivers Board was delivered by the Controller of the Sarawak Rivers Board. Key topics included the Board’s core responsibilities in riverine traffic safety and river cleanliness, relevant legislation and legal provisions.
The subsequent presentation continued with an explanation on the requirements for site inspection by the Sarawak Rivers Board for any activities and engineering works to be undertaken in or across rivers. It also covered the requirement for the Marine Traffic and Risk Analysis (MTRA) study, and the mandatory compliance with the laws and regulations stipulated under the Sarawak Rivers Ordinance, 1993. The financial procedures were also explained, particularly the payment of the Site Inspection Fee prior to conducting a joint site inspection with the project owner, to ensure a clearer understanding, particularly for projects to be implemented by relevant departments or agencies which are yet to appoint contractors or consultants, including projects under the 12th Malaysia Plan, Rural Transformation Projects (RTP) and the upcoming project under 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP).
As a result of the engagement session, the Resident of Mukah Division and representatives of departments/agencies in Mukah Division gained a clearer understanding of the roles and functions of the Sarawak Rivers Board in providing comments on safety and cleanliness for any activities and engineering works carried out in or across rivers.
To conclude the session, the Sarawak Rivers Board expressed appreciation to the Resident of Mukah Division and representatives of departments/agencies in Mukah Division for the courtesy visit, which fostered strong cooperation, and emphasised that the Board continues its efforts through stakeholder engagement, which is essential to facilitate the smooth implementation of the large scale projects including the community projects that benefit the rakyat.
